The Improved Mobility Bed Sheet is a breakthrough new product for the care and use of Parkinson's patients.
One of the difficulties of living with Parkinson's Disease is a reduction in strength and mobility, particularly in the lower extremities.
These popular and very useful queen size sheets have given relief and greatly enhanced the quality of life for many afflicted with Parkinson's disease.
The Improved Mobility Sheet
The central area is intentionally exposed on all sides allowing the hands, elbows, feet and knees to grip the cotton sheet and move the body during rest or sleep. The natural ability to adjust sleeping position with the Improved Mobility Bed Sheet simply can not be achieved with satin sheets or pajamas alone. You will rest soundly without awaking to change sleep positions.

My suggestions here are not cure-alls. Some may work for one person and not another. They tend to be cumulative. Our recommendation is to start with an enhanced mobility sheet and silk pajama bottoms. This will give you the biggest benefit.
MATTRESS SELECTION
a. Select a mattress that is low enough to get into bed without a stool. If it is too high, be sure to use a stool.
b. Pick a mattress as firm as you can. A soft mattress or "Pillow Top" makes every movement a climb out of a hole using energy which could have been better used elsewhere.
c. On my bed I have a short (about 12") bed rail mounted just opposite my pillow. This is remarkably valuable. Mine came from MTS Medical Supply. and cost about $60. It is MTS-Freedom Grip, item 501.
d. Enhanced Mobility Sheets are designed to give the greatest traction in the part under the limbs: hands, elbows, feet and knees. The lowest traction (friction) is under the torso. Differentiation is done by using material of varying slipperiness in the proper places. The sheet is a fitted bottom sheet and the person sleeps on top of it. Note that the traction sheet is exposed on all sides. This is deliberate to provide traction zones all around. It also guards against sliding off the bed.
e. Use silk pajamas, at least bottoms, It doesn't seem to matter what tops you use. I prefer short silk pajama bottoms and cotton tee shirt. This keeps me warm and dry. Silk pajamas increase the sheets effectiveness by about 50%.
f. Each of these things is valuable by itself or in combination with others. Of course, I believe my invention (Enhanced Mobility sheets) is the best. Please send comments.
g. Silk Sheets do not work very well because there is no differential friction (traction.) People are more inclined to slide out of bed with Silk Sheets.
h. Sleeping pills have never been in great favor in the medical community. Make a deal with your physician about what would be the best, and how often you can take them. Then, stick to it.
ENTERING THE BED
Here are the steps I use to get into bed. The right side of the bed is the side you are on when facing the mattress and the pillows are to the right.
a. Stand on the right side of the bed facing the mattress about three feet from the head end. Works in reverse from left side.
b. Raise your left knee to touch the lower right corner of the pillow, turning about 75¼ to the right.
c. Sit down and swing your right leg about 180¼ to the right to slip under the covers followed by the left leg. Your hips will be on the slick portion of the sheet. Push against the Freedom Grip to insert your legs another foot. Arrange the covers and enjoy a good sleep.
About The Inventor
Deryck Nuckton was born in North Carolina, and went through High School there. When he was admitted to Stanford University, he jumped on it and moved to California, never to leave. He went to dental school at the University of California with a specialty in Orthodontics.
This invention, like most, has an interesting story. I was driving home from San Francisco. My mind would not leave a different invention I had been working on for months with little progress. My "Lab" (garage) looked like a lab in the comic pages- tubes, wires, clamps, jugs, coffee cups, beer cans, cold pizza, hoses, etc. everywhere. I turned the radio up loud to get it out of my mind.
As I prepared to climb in bed, it occurred to me that there must be a better way to get into bed. As I lay there, the light went on that differential traction (which orthodontists call "anchorage") was the solution for this problem. Imagine a snow mobile: the skis up front are designed to be slippery, while the drive belt is designed for maximum traction. This is differential traction.
The first prototype was pinned up, on my bed that night, and proclaimed a success in the morning. I am glad that I have been able to develop something that will be of use to my fellow Parkinson Patients.
